when they say leave your pasport on ship do not take it with you off the ship do they mean leave it on the table in your room or in the safe in case happen to in port.

why would you even consider leaving it on a table, when the safe is there. Mine goes in the safe and remains there during my cruise, it is not removed.
If you need it and cant get back on the ship I am very sure the Captain or Purser can retrieve it for you.

For some port stops, some ships will recommend you take a photo ID with you, which can be your passport or your driver's license. I usually opt to leave my passport in the safe and use my license. It's also a good idea to make a photocopy of the picture page of your passport, and keep that with you when you leave the ship.

There are some European ports that require that you take your passport with you. Check your cruise information that's put in your room every evening, as it usually says somewhere on it what type of ID you need for the next day's port stop.

Going to Caribbean ports...you do not have to have a passport to reboard the ship. Take your drivers license and your Carnival ID and you are ok.

HOWEVER....If by some chance, you happen to MISS the ship...and have to fly home....you MUST have a passport to even buy a ticket.

So, as long as you are sure you will make it back to the ship on time, you may leave your passport in the cabin, but I would put it SAFELY in my safe.
