Carnival To Restrict Smoking

First Princess and now Carnival. Both lines today announced major restrictions for smoking aboard their ships. Read more here about Carnival's policy.

To tell you the truth I am a smoker and this does not affect my case
I always use balcony cabin in order to smoke since my wife don't like it
my main problem will come when carnival decide to put the same standars of the spa balcony to the other balcony cabins, I will not go in a cruise vacation so the company decide what I can do and what I cannot do, that is ussually the case in my work so why pay good money for the same as working??

I also know that no smokers have rights but also the smokers have them too so I think that carnival should get a happy medium in this situation...

Cas, you're right, my hubby doesn't like it either, so I smoke on our balcony. However, since so many non-smokers complain about the smoke drifting into their balconies, I'm sure it won't be long before that will be taken away. I think the cruise lines will still let us have smoking areas, but they will be extremely limited. Celebrity was like that, there were only 4 areas on the entire ship.

We smokers are now viewed as the evil that has caused all medical problems. I can remember a day where if you didn't smoke you were considered a nerd. Anyway, get ready for it, soon you'll not be able to smoke anywhere.

It's odd with me. Smoke doesn't bother me if I'm sitting in a lounge or in the casino, yet on the balcony it does. Not to the point that I fly into a rage but it will cut my balcony time short.

That is different, Dave. It bothers me if I'm in an enclosed area and I smoke. I know, I'm weird:)

More to this story...

In order to smoke in the casino you have to be gambling. You just can't walk to the smoking area and light up. Carnival says they will actively police that.

All ticket contracts will be revised such that effective December 1, if someone smokes in their cabin they will be assessed a $250 cleaning fee.

I wonder why they picked during an economic recession to change the current policy. I don't believe the "survey" ever existed. I haven't even received a guest survey from the last 3 cruises.

It has already been proven that non-smoking ships suffer from revenue, such as Paradise did.

I think it would have made more sense to make the piano bar venue non-smoking fleet wide first, leaving the other policies as they were for the time being. I can see it now....light a cigarette in the casino while you are waiting on a table to play and being asked to leave.

The Fantasy Class ship is really the only class that suffers from the new policy. If you don't have a balcony and you don't like disco, or the lounge is closed, your choices become very limited very quick.

Honestly, I think this policy will be regarded by staff and crew in the same way the "alcohol policy" is enforced, at least as far as the cabins go. People really don't need to let this change upset their life or ruin a well needed vacation.

I'll still cruise, and more than likely on Carnival. But the closer they get to all the other lines policies certainly brings the other lines back into consideration for future cruises.

It's interesting that you mentioned not getting a survey - our last two HAL cruises had surveys specific to smoking onboard - hard paper surveys, not e-mailed, online surveys. When I smoked, I never smoked in my cabin - for the same reason I didn't smoke in my house or in my car . . . I didn't like the "stale smoke" smell . . . however, it never bothered be to be around other smokers or in the smoking areas. . . although my husband, who hasn't smoked in 15 years says it bothers him.

I don't remember if I received a survey after the Elation cruise last summer. If I did it was in e-mail with a link.

And also, all the Cigar Bars are smoke-free. Uh, okay. I guess they need to stop calling them cigar bars.

Yes indeed, the Fantasy class ships are really hit hard by these changes. Less so for the other ship classes. One issue I see is the Fantasy class ships do mostly short cruises, which tend to attract passengers who are more likely to want to drink, gamble, and smoke. Also, passengers who have lower incomes and can only afford a 3 or 4 night cruise. Statistics show a higher instance of smoking among that demographic.

Surely Carnival wouldn't do anything that could impact revenues without running the numbers. We'll see.

I think this may turn into something like their attempt to go non smoking on the Paradise.... Once they implement the rules and see the revenue changes, they may alter some of the rules to fix any issues that come up. The Fantasy class ships may very well get rule updates because of the restrictions... especially the "no smoking in the cabin" policy. I can see that affecting them the most. The Fantasy class do not have the numbers of balcony cabins that the larger ships do. So smokers may abandon them because of it. However, John Heald quoted that 90% of Carnival's passengers are non smokers, implying that any smokers that would cancel cruises would be a small number. BUT how many of the 90% are children (not going to be smoking) or spouses of smokers that are going to go to other lines that allow smoking for the smoker in the family?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't know the rules on the other lines well enough to know how many allow smoking in the cabins..
