Default Carnival e-mail about my upcoming cruise (not)
I just received an e-mail from Carnival about my upcoming cruise with them and reminding me of the minimum ID requirements. Nice reminder. One problem. I do not have any Carnival reservations pending.

The e-mail:

Information regarding Cruise Documents

September 20, 2011

We know that you must be bursting with excitement in anticipation of your upcoming cruise! Guess what? We are, too! We have many fun-filled and memorable activities planned for you and can't wait to welcome you on board.

Now, since we cannot spell FUN without "U", we want to take a moment of your time to remind you of the travel documents you will need to sail with us.

If you are a U.S. citizen, we strongly encourage you to bring an original, valid U.S. passport as this will expedite your debark process and will be required if you need to return home by air due to an unexpected emergency.

Alternatively, you may also bring one of the following acceptable travel documents:

Passport Card
Original or suitable (legible) quality copy of a Birth Certificate (issued by the Department of Vital Statistics)
Original Certificate of Naturalization
Enhanced Driver's License (EDL)
Enhanced Tribal Card (Native American Indians)
Trusted Traveler Program Membership Card, e.g., Nexus Card, Sentri Card or Fast Card
A Consular Report of Birth Abroad
Originals or copies of the following will NOT be allowed:

Baptismal Certificate
Hospital "Certificate of Birth"
A government-issued photo ID is also required for all guests 16 years and older. For more information on Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) compliant documents, Click Here or visit us at carnival.com.

If you are a Non-U.S. citizen, it is important you contact your travel agent or consulate.

Also, don't forget to pre-register online since it will speed up your check-in process at the pier and get you onboard faster. To do that, visit us at Carnival.Com/BookedGuests. From there, you will be able to print your boarding pass, luggage tags and other cruise documents.

Thanks for choosing Carnival and see you soon!

Vice President, Guest Services

Maybe its a Carnival Corp email and that were referring to your Princess Cruise? But that is not "upcoming" then is it?

I just got the same email (though I DO have an upcoming cruise). I like the reminder but maybe they should have figured out a better way to tailor it to the correct cruise line. Or maybe someone just sent this to the wrong mailing list and hit all past cruisers or something?

Is your family surprising you with a cruise? Are you sure you're signed up on the Liberty of the Seas and not Carnival Liberty? LOL

I first thought of the Princess cruise, but that is still over a year away. Plus the e-mail has the CCL logo. Jim is likely correct, someone put the wrong distribution list on the e-mail. I've done that before.

It is still a good idea to remind people of the legal requirements. I would not be surprised to learn it is based on people showing up at the pier without the required documents, the ensuing complaints saying it was all Carnival's fault, and someone at Carnival saying "let's do more to communicate the requirements."

I also received one. I do have an upcoming Carnival cruise though. If it was a mistake of using the wrong mailing list, it was a brilliant one. It gave everyone a reminder of the Doc requirements, and if they didn't have a cruise booked... It planted a seed of thought.

Frankly, I have a feeling it was a sneaky way for Carnival to direct market. It's a cheap way to market to past guest who may not have a cruise booked. Those that have one booked just shrugged it off thinking it was in reference to their booked cruise. Those that don't have a cruise booked are puzzled why they got it, but it might plant a seed for them to book a cruise. I point out again the email didn't address you by name or a booking number. Any email I get from a cruise line on a cruise I have booked addresses me by name or refers to a booking number.

I totally agree! Kill two birds with one stone very cheaply. I spoke with some cruise friends that don't have a cruise booked. They got one too. Carnival does have a screwy email system though from my experiences. It is hit or miss getting a Guest Survey at times.
