gratuities...got this from carnival today

November 1, 2011

Hi there!

While we're sure you're not quite packing your bags yet, we thought we'd take a moment to provide you with some important information regarding gratuities for your upcoming vacation.

After careful consideration, our gratuity guidelines will be increasing from $10.00 per person per day to $11.50 per person per day with voyages departing December 1, 2011 and onward. Guests who have pre-paid their gratuities will not be affected by this change.

While decisions like these are never easy, increases to gratuity guidelines are common with all cruise lines. In our case, we have not increased our gratuity guidelines since 2001. Additionally, this new amount will put us in line with most other cruise lines in the industry.

Our shipboard team members work very hard to provide you with top-notch service so we hope you'll agree this increase is well deserved.

Tipping, as you know, is at your discretion. So even though gratuities are automatically added to your onboard Sail & Sign account as a convenience, you are always free to adjust as you please.

We thank you for your understanding. We are committed to providing you with a fun and memorable cruise experience and look forward to welcoming you aboard!

Sincerely,

Thanks for posting this information. I don't think a $1.50 increase in over 10 years is unreasonable. I still give more than the minimum anyway.

not unreasonable at all. I always tip extra so it is no big deal to me. But lets hide and watch the tightwads come out. They can spend hundreds on drinks and casinos but will complain about the increase.
the staff is worth every penny!

Seems to me we've been paying $11.00 on HAL since at least 2006. It's still a good deal. Think about what you'd be doing on gratuities on a week in a hotel and eating out 3 times a day . . . I know I always tip $5 per day hotel room; at least $5.00 - $7.00 for dinner; $3:00 - $5.00 for breakfast - - - oops, I think I'm over the $11.00 per day here...

Yes we all agree the staff is worth every penny, therefore they should increase the pay that they are given instead of counting on tips. We just pay what the ship require and nothning more.

I agree with you folks. The crew works so hard. I can't imagine anyone being upset about this.

Well, I won't say anything about Wooddon's entry ...I just got off the Glory and let me tell you the staff was so fantastic... I felt for them in the Buffet! Some people made such a mess it was disgraceful ! I just couldn't believe how they just walk away and let their kids do whatever they please and leave the mess behind. It made me want to say...Hey you are you going to clean that up or what. The Crew does deserve it, they can certainly increase the pay and the price of the cruise will go up and if that is the only way to get it ..... SO BE IT!

We also feel very sorry for how hard these workers have to work and the abuse they take from passenger and the long hours and days. This is way the cruise lines have added the per person tips on the bill. I have heard from lots of people on our cruises who remove these tips and do not tips at all. This we do not believe should happen, everyone must pay if you like it or not. We do not know what was wrong with our previous post as janfred pointed out. We are not the ones to not pay at all. Thanks.

I dont feel sorry for how hard they work, but I certainly appreciate how hard they work. These hard working people are very very grateful for the jobs they have. They do it without complaining (where guest can hear anyway). The extra tips that I give to them are for service well rendered. I tip the bag person at the grocery store if they willingly take my groceries out to the car for me. I tip the waitress for their service but if it is above the average I am very generous. I have never had a complaint about my service on any of the ships I have been on, it was always more then I expected. That is why I give them more then they expect.

I certainly can't argue that these folks earn their money, and that it's about time that the guidlines for tipping are raised. However Carnival should also raise their saleries. This is the guarenteed portion of their pay. Of course we DO NOT KNOW that Carnival has not given real raises. My dancer daughter has recieved raises during her 10 years of service. Some were general base pay raises and others for longevity and good reviews. I will have to extrapolate that the wait staff has at some point has had a base raise also.

I will still tip extra when it seems right. And it usually does.
