Default Back from Conquest!
We are back from seven day cruise on the Conquest. I had read nothing but bad reviews about the Carnival Conquest, but this was after I had already booked. I posted a question asking for any good reviews and while I did get one, I am going to have to concur with the bad reviews. I will post a review in the "Reviews" section, but in short, this was by far the worst cruise we have been on. We were going for our VIP status with Carnival, but no more as we will be switching cruise lines for our next cruise, so look for me on NCL or maybe Royal's threads from now on.

Sure, I will elaborate on this site, but will try to keep it brief. 1) Our cabin was never cool enough and my husband perspired the entire trip. The problem (and we explained this to maintenance) was that our balcony door would not latch properly, so all of the cool air was being sucked right out of the cracks around the door. We complained numerous times, but it was never resolved and the front desk folks seemed to have cared less.2) The wait staff at the pool area and bars were the rudest we've ever encountered. We had one person ask if we wanted a drink and at that time we did not, we told him maybe later. About an hour later we decided to move to another location on deck and once settled, ordered a drink from another person that came around. The first person made a special trip to our chairs and told us "You just took money out of my family's pocket." He stopped us another time as we were walking through the pool area to get to the restaurant and asked if we wanted to get that drink from him now and I will add that he did this in an aggressive type manner, not jokingly. There were others, especially in the photo area that were almost equally as rude (i.e., several staff members ran by us nearly knocking us down without so much as an excuse me or apology). The staff rarely smiled which was just not good. 3) In addition, to our room being very uncomfortable, the entire ship, but especially in the lido dining areas were extremely hot. We were always sweating while we ate. This has never been the case on any other ships we have been on. 4) The lines were way too long for the buffets because during peaks all lines were not open. I have never seen this on any other cruise. 5) The food was just okay, but the Mexican buffet was inedible. I heard many other complaints about it as well. One couple on the elevator asked us what we thought about it and they stated that they could not eat it as well. We skipped dinner that night in order to be hungry for it, and it was such a disappointment. 6) We were also disappointed that the overall appearance of the ship was very lacking. The ship's carpet was very dirty and the the tile around the hot tubs in the adult area were coming off and lying around on the ground. The television's are very old. It is time for this ship to be dry docked for a face lift.

I will let you know when I post a full review as I do have some good things to say as well. Our room steward was very good as well as the second set of dinner wait staff. We had to asked to be moved from our assigned dining table. Also, I'd like to say that we had a very good time being together and the weather was gorgeous as well as the water. The comedy club was very good too. Had some great laughs there.

It was just not overall what I expect for the kind of money we paid.

I too am sorry to hear this. I can see that happening with the server on Lido deck. Nearly the same thing happened to me in the Casino. I had ordered beers from a waiter. A waitress who had waited on me the night before came up asked me who I had ordered from, and told me to be fair. I couldn't believe it. So I figured this is a teachable moment and whispered to her in an effort to help "You shouldn't say that to guests". I would have let it go if she would have said it in a friendly manner. It was not. I also mentioned this in the survey they sent. Just as all the overwhelmingly good Crew members deserve praise and recognition, the bad ones need some additional training at times. I think it is a good thing for us to call them out for this purpose. Sorry your cruise wasn't up to par.

The Carnival Conquest was last in dry dock in 2009. It is scheduled for dry dock again October 14-28, 2012.

I am sorry you had problems. We were on the fascination last week and things have certainly changed since our first cruise 6 yrs ago. My biggest complaint, and I didnt like it one bit, was our room stewart came by one morning trying to sell us excursion or spa services, anything they offered. I didnt like it. I didnt like it, I didnt like it. He was a door to door salesman on a cruise ship. I politely said no thanks but I do think that is crossing the line.

Oh no!! If any of them ever did that to us our cruising days would be over!! That IS very much crossing the line!! I absolutely hate it when people come to our doors at home, but when I am on vacation and trying to relax. No, no, no!!

A question for the moderators of this site: Do you see comments/issues like these on the other cruise line chats? In particular comments about the staff and their rudeness? This was our fifth cruise, our first was with NCL and I don't have another NCL to compare to, but I do know that out of the four Carnival cruises we have taken, none of them have even come close to the service from staff that NCL gave us. We only switched due to Carnival going out of Mobile and we could drive there and we can drive to New Orleans if we wanted to as well. So we decided to try to get our VIP status and stick to Carnival. With the airfare this year being so cheap we ended up flying to NO, and could probably get some reasonable fares to Orlando and leave out of Port Canaveral as well. So I would just like to know if you do hear those types of comments regarding staff on other cruise lines. I have never heard anything like that from guests when talking about Royal Caribbean, but RC is quite a bit pricier, so you should expect more all the way around. One guy told us he has cruised with all of them and he is going with the bigger better deal all the time, but we do not think that way. We are willing to pay more for better service and/or a better vessel. Thanks!!

Not sure I'd say Royal Caribbean is 'quite a bit pricier' than Carnival, but they are often a little more expensive.

I've encountered rudeness on other lines. We had a rather pompous maitre'd on the Celebrity Mercury several years ago who came around the tables making it pretty clear he expected to be tipped. Well, as a result of that I didn't give him a penny and on the last night he made a snotty remark to me as I left the dining room.

I also saw a bar supervisor publicly berate a bartender because a passenger had just complained to the supervisor about what she felt was being 'dissed' by the bartender. He did this behind the bar while passengers were all around it. Totally unacceptable conduct by the supervisor. What's more, the woman had spilled her pina colada and the bartender gave her a free replacement, but without the fruit garnish. She was upset because the drink didn't look pretty and went looking for the supervisor. This was also on Celebrity. Note that Celebrity is considered a premium cruise line.

And, I've seen crew who were simply having a bad day now and then - on Royal Caribbean too. They can have a personal problem which clouds their judgment, perhaps they were chewed out by their boss, didn't get enough rest, forced to work extra hours, etc. I am not excusing the conduct, but just saying there can be a reason for it.

Personally I have never had bad service or any smart remarks from any Carnival employee. But I have seen times when they were just going through the motions of being a happy employee.

Thanks Dave! I know we are all going to have bad days, I know I do, but even then there is no place for rudeness. I can have a bad day w/o being rude to someone else. I was price comparing NCL, Carnival and Royal for a seven day cruise going out of same port, same week, about the same itinerary and Royal was $300 per person more expensive than NCL and Carnival. To me, that is quite a bit pricier. LOL!! But if their service is top notch, their food top notch and their vessel is top notch, I might be willing to pay that. I would have to research a lot more into it before I would though. Other than the Matrie'd, I did not hear you say that you have seen a lot of complaints from guests about rudeness on the other lines so I am going to take that as meaning you have not seen it.
