Default Buying insurance when booking
Can anyone give any real good advice regarding the insurance they try to sell you when you book your cruise. Has anyone purchased it....used it.....or had any problems when it came time to actually have to unfortunately use it. Just never know if it a rip off. Thanks

Buying travel insurance to protect your investment is never a rip off. The difference between the cruise line insurance and another third party insurance is limits on what it covers and how much you will be reimbursed for claims. For instance; the cruise line may reimburse $50,000 toward a medical evacuation whereas a third party such as Travel Guard, Travel Insured, etc; may reimburse up to $100,000. Another fact to look at is if a pre-existing condition is covered. You will also want to know if the cruise line gives back the full refund or only 80%/90%. Bottom line is do a good comparison between the cost and coverages. Cruise line insurance often is one flat rate or based on cost of cruise, whereas third party often is based on total cost of trip and age of person traveling.

I always get insurance, and never from the cruise line. I like to use insuremytrip.com to compare policies. To me a major factor is medical evacuation coverage. This is often overlooked by travelers but it can cost you big time if you need it, and oftentimes your personal medical insurance won't cover it. Think about how much it might cost you to fly from Cozumel to Miami in a medical jet. You can easily see how it would run $100,000 or more. My wife was critically injured in an auto accident in 2006. They had to fly her 15 miles to the hospital in a medevac helicopter. The bill was $10000 for that short flight. That was 6 years ago.

For my upcoming cruises I decided to let my cruise agent handle the insurance and we went with CSA. I usually go with Travel Insured but CSA is also a good company.

Also Dave....my pvp pretty much led me to believe I'd be well covered with the ship's insurance?

What else would a pvp say? They get a commission from selling you their cruise protection. Try looking at Travel Insurance - InsureMyTrip.com
