Carnival Triumph return to service delayed again

<hr style="color:#ffffff; background-color:#ffffff" size="1"> Carnival Triumph will not return to service until June 13, this because of the additional damage and work interruptions caused by the severe storm that caused the ship to break away from the shipyard pier in Mobile, Alabama.

This means two more five-night cruises will be canceled.

Guests booked on the canceled cruises will get a full refund, reimbursed travel expenses and a 25% discount on a future cruise. Travel agent commissions will be protected.

The ship is at the Mobile Cruise Terminal but will be moved to Freeport, Bahamas, at some point, because a dry-dock large enough to hold Carnival Triumph is not available in Mobile.

My gosh! The cost of repairs is bad enough--but the lost revenue until June 13 is awful.

I guess the turning point will be when they change their name in order to shed the bad publicity. "In a reorganization, Carnival will now become Mardi Gras Cruise Line."

That was their first ship, wasn't it? Or was it Tropicale? They've come a long way, baby---like Princess Cruises starting with Princess Patricia.

Yes, Mardi Gras, and famous for the first cruise getting stuck on a sandbar or something, and the ship opening all bars for free unlimited drinks until they were freed. And so the legend began.

Tropicale was their fourth ship. Mardi Gras-Carnivale-Festivale-Tropicale

Really Dave! When will this name change take place?

Dave 05-14-2013 06:42 AM

They'll keep the Carnival name. Too many logo bar napkins and t-shirts in stock to justify changing the name.

Meanwhile Triumph is in drydock at Freeport getting the remaining engineering enhancements (additional emergency generator, system redundancies, etc.) as well as the Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements such as Guy's Burger Bar and the other venues.

Butch who was the cruise director on the Dream recommended that I read the book Devils on the Deep Blue Sea.

It explains the history of Carnival. On the maiden voyage of the Mardi Gras, the Harbor Pilot decided to practice his Italian and gave the helmsman the order in Italian for turn (I forget which direction). The helmsman promptly snapped to attention and turned the ship in the opposite direction he had intended- he got left and right confused in Italian. The Captain realized what had happened, and issued a counter order for the correct maneuver, but it was too late and the ship side slipped into the sand bar.

Given that the Harbor Pilot's job is to ensure that stuff like that never happens, that was the end of his career.

Called it. If the ship is going to be out of service for 3 months for repairs, why take it out again for a month next year.
