Carnival To Ban Balcony Smoking & Increase Tip Amount

Starting in October Carnival is banning it and also raising the daily auto-tip fee. Read it here.

I know a lot of people get upgrade to the balcony so they can smoke. It always stinks (no pun intended) when you're out on your balcony and a wave of smoke from an adjacent balcony comes through. Although I'm happy about it, do you think this will hurt the sale of balconies? It'd be great if the price of balconies dropped due to decreased demand. I imagine it's mostly based on safety as it's so easy for ashes and butts to blow back into the cabin.

As for the tip increase - don't think $3.50 for a 7 day cruise will kill anyone. Funny thing is, the same ones who'll complain about this will blow tons of $ in the casino or on excursions. Most of the staff work 7 days a week and I don't think the cruise line pays much of a salary so most of their income is from gratuities. Maybe I'm biased as I work in the food service industry. As the Food Lion lion says - that's just my 2 cents.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how this affects balcony bookings. I'm sure Holland America and Norwegian are also looking to see if their business picks up as a result, which could mean their balcony pricing will increase if they see a large influx of angry Carnival cruisers. My gut feeling is it won't have as dramatic effect as it might seem for any of them. And of course, if HAL gets a lot of Carnival smoker business it won't really matter to the bottom line for Carnival Corporation.

Like Dave said, we'll have to see if this impacts balcony bookings. I haven't looked at other lines' policies in detail to see what they are, but I imagine that it's easy for cigarettes to get suck into the propulsion / engine systems if they're tossed overboard from the balcony.

Personally, I'm a non-smoker, so I think this is a good policy. However, I know some people do like to smoke, so they may not be happy about this policy.

I haven't tried Carnival yet, but would like to on an upcoming cruise. Just have to decide when and where. Thinking maybe the Eastern Caribbean next maybe in 2015 or 2016.
