Anyone else on board???? First time in Puerto Rico for the 10 of us....any suggestions? A few of us are arriving on 12/9 to catch some sights precruise (thinking Bio Bay, El Yunque rainforest) and post cruise (Bacardi Rum Factory and exploring Old San Juan). Any other recommendations? Also, pre cruise we will be staying at Mariott San Juan Stellaris Resort and Casino and post cruise Sheraton Old San Juan (formally Wyndham Old San Juan). Anyone stayed at either or both of these?

Many thanks in advance

We just got back from a cruise out of San Juan (different cruise line), and stayed 1 night before the cruise at the Marriott. Very nice hotel, well located, clean, large room. There are 2 restaurants in the hotel, one a fancy Italian and the other a buffet/menu order combo, with some tables outside on the terrace. Not cheap, and the buffets we thought were quite good & well worth the money. There are also some decent restaurants walkable from the hotel, I understand, but with rainy weather and late arrival, we didn't bother. The hotel is a lively place, at least on weekends; the disco, which is open to the lobby, is VERY loud at night; casino is good-sized, located just off the lobby. Nice pool area, and a nice well-groomed beach (assuming the surf lets you use it.)

As far as tours and things to see, it will depend on how many days pre- and post-cruise you are staying there, and on your air schedule, as to what to see. We had a late flight back so opted for a rainforest tour after the cruise, which was enjoyable - beautiful scenery despite the rain (in fact, that added to the atmosphere, we thought). The bioluminescent bay is a long way - I don't advise doing it on your own unless you have at least 2 nights before/after the cruise. And if the seas are at all rough, tours there will most likely be cancelled.

Just be sure you don't have to spend more than a couple hours at the airport, if at all possible. There isn't enough seating anywhere, and no decent food past the security checkpoint!

Thanks Karen for such a prompt and detailed response. We will be taking a direct flight from LAX on dec 8 and arriving around 10am dec 9. I just got a return email from one of the tour companys who offers a Bio Bay tour that picks u up from the hotel at around 5:30pm and you then kayak biobay. My other schedule is shaping up to look like El Yunque rainforest Dec 10 then after we ckin/take our luggage to the cabin, get back off and explore some of old san juan(since the ship doesn't leave until 10pm). Then the sunday we return we plan to do the bacardi rum factory tour, one shopaholic in the group wants to hit that megamall, and then maybe some more san juan exploring. our direct flight back to LAX leaves on Monday afternoon. I'm gonna need a vacation from my vacation.

I think you will! Sounds like you have some pretty good plans worked out. Remember you will be ending up 4 times zones later than you are used to at home.

One thing I forgot to mention - if possible, you may want to request a room on the 10th floor or higher, to get farther away from the noise of the disco. (Yes, it's THAT loud.) Another couple on our cruise stayed on the 6th floor and said they could hear it in their room; we were on the 15th and didn't hear a thing.
