First time cruiser

Hello,
I'll be travelling on the Carnival "Spirit" (Mex. Riviera) in Jan 05. I'd like to get some feedback on what to expect, pros and cons of this cruise, etc.... One of my concerns is cigarette smoke. I'm sensitive to it and have upgraded to a balcony room so I can have some fresh air when needed. I'm told that smoking is allowed all over the ship except possibly the dining and spa areas. Will I be able to smell second hand smoke from other cabins in my room. Or is the ship "ventilated" enought to mitigate the problem.

Most of the common areas are smoke free. We did have a problem with smoke on the balcony. If someone near by is smoking the smoke will find its way into yours. Naturally the casino was smokey as was the sports bar. Other than that there should be no problems. The door to the balcony is a hinged spring loaded door and if I remember right it shuts down the HAVC in the room when open. If you want to keep the door open you will need to take a bungee cord or some rope to secure it.

It was a fun cruise and a very nice ship. We always prefer a table for 2 when dining. We were originally seated at a table for 6. We seen the Maitre'd Manual and he gave us a fantastic table for 2 on the second level overlooking the dining room below. He was one the of the best and most friendly Maitre'd that we ever had. Be sure to do this if you want to have different dining arrangements.

Don't let the smoke issue worry you. You will have a great time.

I'll start relaxing now and enjoy looking forward to the cruise...
I also just added "bungee cord" to my list of things to take.
I'm really looking forward to it!

I have problems dealing with smoke also and found that it was not a problem. I may just have been lucky but I could not detect smoke from balconies nearby me (of course it is possible that there were just no smokers around me). In the public areas smoking is permitted but only on one side of the ship.
