Is it necessary to book excursions ahead of time? Is it less expensive? Is the charge more if you book on the ship. Are these tours necessary or can you do things on your own once you get to the islands?

It is not necessary to book escursions ahead of time--but it is advisable; the more popular ones fill up fast. The price is the same whether you book ahead of time or on the ship. The tours are certainly not necessary. Neither is it necessary to book tours through the ship. You can book directly from many of the tour operators ahead of time online, or even when you get to the port. But, depending on the port, there are many things you can do without booking a tour.
