That's really going to depend on how early you want off the ship. They will give you a letter offering a choice of the "Self Assist" or Regular Debarkation. For the regular debarkation, your luggage number (1) will be called first after the "Self Assist" folks are debarked.

Personally, I don't book my flights too early as to have to rush off the ship and just let them take it the night before. You never know when the ship is going to be delayed getting cleared. Also I don't like ending the cruise with toting luggage up or down steps and waiting in a big line.

Now, they have changed how the Platinum Debarkation tags work in the last few years. Now we are given Number 1. They used to keep our luggage in a separate VIP section.

We have done both.. It is a mad house with all those people and their luggage trying to get off at the same time.. Since we are VIP usually now they hsve us in a meeting area and then escort us off and then we find our luggage.. Better to just sit and relaxe a little before the mad dash to reality of life..We usually have a 1pm or 2pm flight.. You have til 10am to get off

One thing to think about....

if you use the Regular VIP (where you put your luggage out the night before)....

you will have to wait for all the self assist to clear customs.

Now that 50% of the ship in some cases does self assist....that can mean Customs gets backed up.

VIP just gets you off the ship...it does not VIP to the front of the line at Customs....

We were VIP disembark on the Dream in June. It goes pretty smoothly. They have you meet in the aft lounge until they are ready to do the VIP disembark. How are you getting to the airport? Carnival transport? Taxi?

Self assist will be faster (I think) You may save time since you have your luggage with you. Even though we were VIP, our luggage took forever to come out. So it would be safer to do self assist.

To add to what Linda said above abut VIP not getting you through customs faster, we have found that if you get a porter to cart your luggage for you they can get through customs faster (they normally have a porter only customs line.) So depending on the time you actually get off the ship, consider that if you are running behind.
