We have been reading slot of the previous cruisers views about different ship and destinations and one thing we keep seeing is how you are able to purchase medications on some of the bigger ports. Does one need a prescription inorder to do this? Has anyone ever purchased some medications. With our drug costs so high here in Canada this would be an excellent way to offset the costs.

canuckcrusiers - Certain countries do not require written prescriptions to purchase medications over the counter at their pharmacies. The main exception is always narcotics whereby a prescription is always required from a local physician.

Many times the medications purchased outside the country will not be allowed entry back into your own country when you return. (The drug sniffing dogs do earn their keep!) . You cannot always be sure of the quality of the medication either- a danger you need to weigh before making such a purchase. Fines and more are possible.

The sale and purchase of medications is a questionable subject for cruise-chat and it might be wise for the moderators to consider closing this thread.

That's probably a good idea. While I am sure this is a very legitimate questions, it is a questionable topic that is not part of a cruise. We are all well aware of the costs of medicine these days, it's ridiculous in the states as well as elsewhere in the world. I don't think there's much we can do about it on Cruise-Chat. So I'll close the thread before it takes a turn we don't want it to.
