Here comes social networking at sea!

Here is a link to the Press Release.

I actually don't know what to think of this yet. I like the idea of all the information features, especially the weather, news, and daily shipboard activities including sample menus and entertainment options.

For some reason I have some apprehension about the social networking part. It looks to be a great way for groups to communicate on board. Anyway, if I'm reading it right it is supposed to be FREE to anyone with a Wi-Fi enabled computer.

I've never taken a laptop on a cruise before, I guess I'll take one this time and check it out.

Dwayne - The Dream becomes more and more fascinating as she nears completion! The FunHub is a hit with me already and I'm sure all age groups will find it a great way to connect with each other as well as all the happenings on board! More importantly - you will not have to bring your own laptop with you - they will be available on board(for a fee)- it saves a lot of wear and tear on us! I hope they'll have enough! This is one feature I'll be sure to try out when I'm on the short cruise in Nov.

Oh my, the fantastic impartial world of the computer comes to life again. I guess it's a good option, but for me, I would rather do my "social networking" face to face. Weather is a good option, too. However, walking outside and looking at the skies usually tell me what's going to be happening.

penny - For better or for worse the face and style of cruising is changing. Some of the ideas are going to have positive impacts and others will follow the Edsel into oblivion. This is becoming an all electronic age, moving inexorably faster and faster! The big problem is...just when do we truly relax and let go?? So long as the new fangled ideas do not destroy the pleasure of cruising to me I can support it -when it begins to detract then I shan't participate in that aspect! Better yet -Let's all rub Dwayne's scalp for luck and visit the Casino!!

Years ago I took a vacation at Casco Bay in Maine, (my brother was working there during the summer break from school). They advertised, no phone in the room, no TV anywhere, and I was skeptical. But it was the most relaxing week I'd had in a long time. Surprise . It is one of the things I found so relaxing about cruising, it was hard for anyone back home or WORK to contact me. But times are changing, I'll still not connect to phone or web on a cruise. It's time to let go. Indeed, nearly the only time I get a good nights rest is cruising.
So no FunHub for me, free or not

Getting free access to news reports, checking out menus and so forth...that is fine. But can't you get that on the cabin TV set? How many will spend way too much time on the "facebook at sea"? That sounds like a terrible way to spend a cruise, and I suspect it will attract the teenagers who will bogart the desktop stations.

Billybuzzy, rubbing Dwayne's head is a much better idea than the funhub. Maybe they're trying to do away with printing the Capers every day. I know technology is the way of the world, but I still prefer "networking" by talking face to face with others.

Well, you guys can berate it all you want. I won't use the thing for "facebooking" or other such stuff either BUT, I give great credit to Carnival in trying to come up with ways to keep up with the current "connected" generation. If they can attract more new cruisers because of the connectivity they offer on their cruises, I say more power to them. There are plenty of amenities on a ship that I don't make use of, but that doesn't mean that I have too or even that someone else doesn't consider them a must have. For instance, I don't know why they bother putting a TV in the cabins. I don't go on a cruise to sit in the cabin and watch movies. But I am sure there are some people that would cry like you took their teddy bear away if you said the TVs were being pulled.

I don't watch a lot of TV on the ships, but I do like to catch the news in the morning. I missed it on our recent Grandeur cruise since they didn't provide any CNN or other news channel.

I'll admit to being one who was appalled at the prospect of cell phones all over the place when the technology came into effect on the ships - but truthfully it hasn't been that bad and certainly not a distraction.

Cruisedad and Penny - Perhaps we here at cruise-chat should duly note that we can offer our fellow cruisers a "FunRub" on each others noggins for casino luck! According to Dwayne - It works!!!
