It's to be expected with the rising cost of fuel. The oil spill probably didn't help. No one likes added cost, but cruise lines simply can't continue to operate at the same level with such volatile fuel costs. When you look at the broad scope, an air ticket will cost $300/$400 for a few hours plane ride. A cruise in comparison can cost $400/$500 (low season); and you get seven days with meals and entertainment. If fuel supplements are added back on then we simply have a choice: to cruise or not to cruise. If you choose to cruise you can pay for it by giving up a few lattes, a nail manicure, a few beers at the bar, and taking your lunch for a week instead of fast food. I certainly hope no one will take it out on the crew and not pay gratuities.

I found this announcement odd, because I listened in on the Stockholder's Meeting ( I think it was last month or in February) via the internet and Arison was asked this question specifically.

He said (and I can not remember the exact quote) that Carnival was not considering it ...

he sounded like it would not be an issue...

I wonder if something specifically in the UK has happened to affect their fuel prices????

There has been a lot more market volatility in Europe than here - and that is saying something given the past two weeks on Wall St. Ironically, Brent Crude futures have seen big price drops over the past few days because of investor doubts about Greece.

I do think those lines being based in the UK has a lot to do with it.

I'm with you, Cruise Fanatic. I hope it doesn't happen, but the cruise lines cannot operate at a loss. I, too, hope people don't take it out on the crew and start removing tips. It sure isn't their fault.

One less drink a day and that covers any fuel charge;-)....

Happy Cruising,
