I talked to a person today that said she and a group are going on the Carnival Fantasy. The ship leaves New Orleans on May 11, 2009 for a 5 day Western cruise. She told me that one female who will be traveling in her group did not have a passport. I thought that everybody who leaves the country needed one. Carnival told the girl she didn't need it. Does anybody have an answer to this?

If the cruise begins and ends in the same U.S. port you do not need a passport; just proof of citizenship and a photo I.D.

HOWENER, a passport is the best form of identification you can ever have and is highly recommend.

Will she be able to get off of the ship in the Mexican ports?

Yes. The governments of the ports-of-call in the Caribbean do not check individual credentials of the passengers. They clear cruise ships en-masse.

Thanks, I will let her friend know.

If there is an emergency and it happens while she is outside of the USA, she can not fly home because she does not have a passport.

Again, get your passports, they will be required one day soon.

While the most current rules allow for this exception, it is not a good idea to cruise without one. As has been repeatedly posted on the forum, emergencies can happen.

Get Your Passport!

Look here for Carnival's Travel Document requirements.
