Roatan on the Legend

We visited Roatan in January when the iterary was changed on the Miracle. We didn't go on any shore excursions and certainly were NOT impressed with the area at the port.

I understand Carnival is building a multi-million dollar complex there, but until then, has anyone been on the beach excursion to Coral Cay? I have heard the beaches are beautiful, but would like to know about this one in particular.

We are traveling in two weeks on the Legend with first-time Carnival cruisers and would like it to be the first of many for them. They live in New England and right about now, going to a nice beach is ALL that's on their minds!

Any help is appreciated, maybe another suggestion too.

We were on the Legend last July/08 and actually visited the Gumbalima Wildlife Refuge and had a really great time. We actually got to see and play with young spider monkey's. They came down from the trees and literally sat on your shoulders and allowed you to pet them. For someone who has never had the opportunity to see and pet a real monkey except in zoos this was a Big First for myself and wife.
Yes I also have to agree that the small wharf and docking facility was something to be desired, but at least you weren't tendered in as was the case for us in Belize City. Never once did we feel threatened with our safety
