We booked through an agent on the Carnival Valor. But we have not received any info as to where we are on the ship. We booked a guaranteed cabin. I think that means that there is "a chance" for an upgrade. Am I right??

Yes, there's a chance. You are guaranteed to be in at least the category you have paid for, but you could be upgraded if there are unassigned cabins in a higher category for which you are qualified. This doesn't mean that you will necessarily get one, or that the upgrade may even seem like one. For example, if you booked an inside cabin, you will most likely get an inside cabin, though perhaps on a higher deck (that's an upgrade in the cruise line's mind, though perhaps not in ours as their customers!) It seems to me that the farther ahead you book a cruise, the more likely you are to be upgraded if the sailing is not sold out.
