Many may think this is silly, but we make our daughters go online and read the latest "cruise-bruise" incidents the week before we depart on any cruise. It must work because on the last cruise, she would not even open the door for the cabin steward unless someone else was with her in the room!

Another idea is to make sure your family has the walkie talkies...of course sometimes they do not work down in the pits of the ship, but if you do have to be alone, its nice to contact another family member to meet you at the elevator or in a public place to walk you back to your cabin.

Let's not lose site of the fact that at 17, you as a parent are still legally responsible for your child.
agreed, and they are still a child. More than legal obligation, no matter where you come from there is a pretty heavy moral obligation.
The parents in the story recounted by cruise specialist, really can't be seen as at fault, they had every reason to think that their child would be okay for that specific trip.
Since the perp got off Scott free, so would anyone who took out their rage on the guy!
There's something about the "international waters" part of that incident that just dosen't wash with me; sounds more like somebody just didn't want to be bothered. You're telling me a rapist can walk away? What about a murderer? What about international treaties and things like that? I'm way out of my element here but something stinks.
Thank you to the poster who pointed out that bad things can happen to anyone, including boys/men! Just look at the recent abductions (one of which was miles from where I work) where boys are taken---the one here was a teen taken in broad daylight at a BUS STOP at gunpoint with 14 or so other people watching. Predators are becoming more bold and less afraid of law enforcement and THAT should scare all parents.

Maybe it's because in my vocation I see the ultra underside of life, combined with the fact I have two boys, I know that bad things can, and do happen, to all kinds of people. In some regards, I'm tainted and leery of all folks, until I meet them.
I always told my kids that if they see a gun pulled on them, their chances are better to run a zig-zag pattern away. People who try to intimidate with guns are not the type who spend time at the range.
