I have read in several threads, people had their luggage lost by the cruise ship. Carnival's website states you can carry on all of your luggage if you choose to do so. Is it really that troublesome to just carry it on yourself to insure it gets to the right cabin and at a decent time?

After 20+ cruises, we have never carried all our stuff on board and they have never lost one piece of luggage.
I do however take the normal precaution and "cross pack" our suitcases, so that IF one gets lost...we all have something to wear.
For a 7 day cruise, I pack 3 days in one suitcase and the rest of the days in another. I use a hanging bag for the "good stuff".

I think the Carnival Luggage Webpage is referring to "carry-on" luggage as in the airline definition of carry-on. Everything you carry aboard the ship has to fit in an x-ray machine. You can take all of your luggage off the ship on debarkation day, regardless of the size.
It may be a coincidence, but a nice tip to the bag-handlers/porter at the pier can result in your bags beating you to the room, especially if you jokingly ask them for that to happen. It has worked for me everytime on Carnival Cruises. Remember, the porters do have access to the "VIP" bag tags.

Rhonda, I agree with the other recent post to your question. 6 cruises and never lost a single piece of luggage. The airline has lost some but never the cruise ship. It is really nice to board and just start having fun. It is possible your cabin will not be ready if you board early so you don't want to be saddled with your luggage. But cross pack is a great idea. All your bags may not show up until after dinner so bring a small bag with the essentials. Also be sure you lock your bags. The hands on the pier are usually not employees of the cruise line and have been known to open and liberate things. They will not chance a locked bag, But take your camera with you.
You may have mis-understood the comments about "lost luggage". Most of the time its really "delayed" luggage that is being discussed. Example, we often suggest a carry on bag with a change of clothes for the first dinner, maybe swim wear and your bathroom stuff just in case your luggage does not get from the baggage storage below decks to your cabin. It could take them until 7 or 8 o'clock to get all the luggage to your cabin. Doesn't mean they lost it. With 2500 passengers with a couple of bags a piece...well that's a lot of bags..
Don't try to carry on all you luggage.. that's just crazy talk. I always bring a carry on for the "expensive items" and the items I mentioned above. I also always check the rest of our luggage (and there is a lot of it). Never had a problem with the cruise line losing a bag. The airlines... well that's another story.
