Using a NoteBook for email

Can someone please enlighten me?
When using your own notebook to connect to the ships internet system, do you need to bring a data cable with you? Will Carnival Freedom have room access to the internet?

Wireless is the way for all new ships - and I believe the Carnival Freedom has wireless from stem to stern including the cabins. So no cables are needed - I'd doubt that cabins even have an ethernet plug-in. I was surprised to find fairly widespread wi-fi on the Holiday last week since it is Carnival's oldest ship. I was able to use my laptop in our suite, by the pool, and in other areas. This was a major improvement from our previous cruise on this ship when wi-fi was only in the library. As long as your laptop has a card that can handle wireless G you should be fine.

Hi Dave,
Looking at my notebook it appears to be set up for wireless. There is a wireless switch at the top of the keyboard.
Do I need a separate plug in card as well or does the notebook search out the correct channel on board ship.
Please excuse me I am a bit ignorant on this subject.

You might want to go to a friends house that is wireless, or go to an internet cafe and try it out.
If it has a card it should search for a connection.

I am presuming you mean an inbuilt card. I am thinking it has because when i switch on the notebook it comes up with "installed wireless devices" "wireless LAN ON" Is that all I need.

Most modern laptops have wireless cards integrated into the motherboard. Older laptops may not, but you could still add one via an expansion slot in the side of the computer.

It sounds like your laptop does indeed have a buit in card, so it should automatically detect any wireless networks that are in range.

Worst case you can rent one on the ship. WiFi card that is.
