Mobile Gambling Soon on Celebrity

Here's something we all probably knew was coming: soon, you won't have to go to the casino on some Celebrity ships to gamble--you can download an app to a mobile device and lose your money ANYWHERE on the ship.

I am disappointed in Celebrity. Are they that desperate to make money they have to resort to this? I think it cheapens everything Celebrity stands for. Isn't going on a cruise suppose to be about getting away and disconnecting. Are people really that addicted that they have to have their nose stuck in a mobile device gambling while their spouse gets dressed? Wouldn't this contribute to gambling addition? I can see it now, the first person falling off a ship because they were walking around with their mobile device gambling, not paying attention. Tacky, Tacky.

At least it will give the onboard comics something to make jokes about besides the toilets. "This guy was walking along the Promenade Deck with his nose buried in a iPhone when he failed to notice that a . . . . ."

Not to diminish other cruise lines, but Celebrity is allegedly a premium cruise line this type of thing seems quite out of character. It's really something that if it had to happen, you'd expect to see it on Carnival, Norwegian, or Royal Caribbean, since those lines tend to promote the casino more than Celebrity ever has.

But then Celebrity rolled out drink packages a couple years before the other lines, so perhaps they are trying really hard to become a mainstream line? And, to quote Jerry Seinfeld, "not that there's anything wrong with that".
