Default Former SS Regent Rainbow headed to the breakers today
The wonderful U.S. built classic passenger ship currently named SS The Rainbow headed out of Greece today, under her own steam power, for Port Said and then the breakers at Alang. The ship was built as the SS Santa Rosa for Grace Lines by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1958. I believe this is the last steam powered passenger ship that still could operate with it's own propulsion plant. Here is the wikipedia info.

I saw this ship as the Regent Rainbow at Cozumel in the 1990s.

So sad to see the last US built ship go to the scrapyard. If they hadn't rebuilt her into that dreadful ship the Emerald. If the ship was in her original form, it would have found a buyer much sooner. Alas, the Big U is the last of her kind. Imagine if they had rebuilt her into the enlarged version of the Emerald? She might have been scrapped as well.
