New to handicap rules

We will be using for the first time a handicapped placard to park at the Port of Miami. Someone told me that with a handicapped placard that parking is free at the port. I couldn't find anything to verify that info that is current. The most recent info was from 2008. Could anyone tell me if it is still true that parking is free?

Also, it seems that Carnival denies the use of heating pads on board and will confiscate it as you try to board and they find it in the luggage. Do you think with a doctors permission note it would be accepted? Has anyone tried this?

If Carnival considers a heating pad to be a hazard of some kind, I doubt they'll allow it even with a doctor's note.

Can you use a hot water bottle or those sports packs that get hot instantly for an injury? It won't last all night but may give you some relief when necessary.

Sandy,
Thanks for the hot water bottle idea. I think that may do the trick as the heat activated belts don't do much for very long and are pretty expensive.

Heating pads are definitely on the confiscated items list for Carnival.

As for free handicapped parking at Miami - I believe it is true but they only have a limited number of spots designated. I suggest you call them or send an e-mail. Look here for contact info for the Port Of Miami.

Thanks for the info

Dave,

We are going to take Sandy's suggestion and take a hot water bottle. It's been a looong time since I've seen one of those around. Parking is free and the port suggests that you arrive one hour before general boarding. We sail March 20th and I will post any updated information I have that could be helpful. Thanks again.

It's true

We WERE able to use our handicapped placard to get free parking at the Miami port. When entering, take the ticket as usual and then make sure to go to a live person when exiting and do not use the kiosks to pay. They were friendly and it only took a few minutes for them to process it .

Thanks for the information on handicap parking. How was the cruise? Did you end up taking and using a hot water bottle, and did it do the job?
