My husband and I will be driving down from Vermont to Bayonne New Jersey in March of 2009 for our next cruise. My question is do we chance making the drive the same day - (it should only be about 4 hours) or should we head down the night before? If we head out the day before anyone have any suggestion on where to stay? Thanks for your input~!

My advice always is to arrive at the port the day or night before. Particularly if you're coming from the northeast in winter, it's "better safe than sorry" to my mind. New England can be hit by snow storm in March, and a little extra wiggle room can be nice. It also insures you against mechanical breakdown of your car getting in the way of your cruise.

You can take advantage of your extra day and go to New York City. Or, if you come down the night before, you will know you can wake up on cruise day with peace of mind and start your cruise relaxed.

Those were all my concerns. Now I need to find a motel near the port - any suggestions?

If you go to "Find" at the top of the discussion box, and type in "Bayonne" you'll find several previous discussions regarding hotels/motels near the port. You can also type in "Cape Liberty" for additional information. Some hotels include parking for the duration of your cruise, some will transfer you to the port, etc.

You might also consider going by rail to New Haven,Ct and connnecting with a bus to the pier from New Haven. We are doing that for our Explorer cruise next April!Bus fare from New Haven is $85/pp round trip. It sure saves on parking!!

Then you have to worry about lugging your luggage from train to bus to pier. We are looking forward to not haing to worry about weighing our luggage next year!
billybuzz - are you going down the night before? If so what is the name of the motel you are staying at?

kclvt-Living in Central Ct. - it's relatively easy for us to get to NYC. Overnight in NYC isn't needed-we board the train in the AM and get to the pier at 1 PM- Red Caps handle the bags on the train and to the bus, stevedores handle the bags at the pier and there has never been a problem. It is a very hassle free way of cruising!

Bon Voyage,

Hi we are also cruising next March from Bayonne but will be staying in NYC for a couple of days beforehand. What is the best way to get to the port and how long would it normally take? Any ideas? Thanks very much
