Transportation Ft. Lauderdale to Port of Miami

I have a package that includes 2 nights in Ft. Lauderdale, but cruise departs from Port of Miami. Should we do the 2 nights in Ft. Lauderdale or will they be too much trouble? If we do, should we fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale? And can we turn a rental car in at the Port?

Transfers from Fort Lauderdale to the port in Miami are easy to arrange and it is usually preferable to fly into FLL anyway (much less congestion, often cheaper, etc).
