Should we take the shuttle from the airport?

I have another question for anyone who knows. We're flying into Houston and thought we would take the shuttle to Galveston. But some friends of ours that are going with us said they heard the shuttle takes hours getting there, and that it's cheaper to rent a car. Has anyone had any experiences with the shuttles? If you know of a better way to get to Galveston, please let me know. I can't wait to be an experienced cruiser and actually know what I'm doing!!
