We plan to get there the day before the cruise and don't would like to stay at a hotel that isn't crappy, but isn't too far from the air port or the port of miami (don't want to pay a ton in taxi fees)

IMHO the best place to stay is the Holiday Inn Port of Miami. You will have to pay for taxi from MIA to the hotel. But once your there you won't have to pay for taxi's go back in forth to dinner, or for entertainment. The Bayside Market is right across the street and has all you need--shopping, restaurants, entertainment. The next morning it is a quick taxi ride to the pier costing maybe $8-$10.
