Taxi from NYC port to Newark

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are leaving for our cruise on the Gem this weekend. We're staying in Newark because we really liked a hotel there when we left out of Bayonne on Explorer last year. We have a car service coming to take us from Newark to NYC the morning of the cruise.

We haven't scheduled anything for the way back; my husband figured we'd just grab a cab at the port after disembarkation and head back to Newark. I said I wanted to make sure it would be that easy before we left; if not, I want to schedule a car.

Can anyone tell us if it's easy to grab a taxi from NYC to Newark post-cruise, and how much it might cost?

My experience was Yes, you can find a taxi. However; it wasn't cheap. This was in 2006 and there was something about the taxi crossing over into New Jersey and it possibly having to return empty. It cost me about $70.

Depending upon the number of ships in port, finding a taxi might not be so easy. For the driver to get to the drop-off point at the pier, he has to go up a ramp, and then it's a long wait to go down another ramp after he's picked you up. The past few times, we ended up walking across 12th Avenue to catch a taxi. If I was going to Newark, I'd use a car service. It's more comfortable, too.

What about the ship's transfer service ?

Would you be able to get a transfer from NYC to the Newark airport? How much would that be? The only issue is, we're leaving our car at the hotel (we're driving, not flying), so we'd still have to catch a taxi from the Newark airport to the hotel...
