Jake & Liz,
Under this same section you will find other threads where Miami hotels have been mentioned alot. They will give you some good tips. I always use Holiday Inn Port of Miami. It is right across from Bayside Market which has a lot of restaurants and shopping, and is a quick taxi ride to the port in the morning.
Jake & Liz, it sounds like you booked the hotel through the cruise line. If you did, then their brochure should list the hotels they usually use. Of course, if those happen to be full, they can choose another. You can ask your TA to find out for you, or call the cruise line yourself and ask which hotel you have been assigned.

We have been booked in at the Holiday Inn at the airport, looks like we have free transport to the port. Is there any nice places we could visit in the area if we have any time to spare? Thanks in anticipation.
You probably won't have enough time to see things outside Miami, such as the Everglades, unless you are spending 2 nights there before the cruise. However, Bayside Marketplace, which Cruise Fanatic mentioned, is a fun place to explore - right by a marina, lots of little shops and some decent casual restaurants.
