Has anyone taken a cruise out of San Diego? Is it easy to get in to and out of?

Yes, San Diego is very easy. The airport is a short taxi ride to the pier. San Diego is an excellent city to do a pre or post stay. Holiday Inn is right across from the cruise terminal.

I live in San Diego and I've cruised from here twice with my third coming on 3/28/09. I'll admit that the terminal is small and antiquated for such a great cruise port. (I have heard that the Port of San Diego is in negociations for a BIG renovation.)It also does not have all the comfort of other terminals, but my previous two times, they proved to be organized, even when embarking two ships on the same day. They clearly mark where to go to leave baggage depending on the ship you're embarking on. I normally like to be on the ships early but if you wait just two hours more and board after 1pm, the wait is much shorter and much less complicated. As always, I suggest filling out as much of your boarding paperwork online to minimize the wait.

In addition, right down the street to the North is a wide array of San Diego car rental locations to choose from. The city planners really did a great job of keeping everything centrally located to make tourist's stay more enjoyable!

Edit: Removed commercial link.

What about getting off the ship at San Diego?

My friend will be picking us up and I checked the port site and there is no parking at the port. I emailed them and they said my friend can park on the street metered or in a paid lot and then we can call her when we're ready for pickup and she has to show id to get in. Doesn't seem very user friendly. They could at least have a cellphone waiting area like some airports do.

In all my cruises, I don't remember a port where I did not have to pay for parking except Long Beach where we stayed a night at the Queen Mary and got to park free for the duration of our cruise. San Diego has a huge parking lot directly across the street from the pier and dozens of parking lots with free shuttle service to the airport or the pier.
