All the hotels I found in SF were in the $200 range so we opted for the San Remo which was only $80 per night & still within walking distance to the pier/ Fishermen's Wharf/ Trolley restaurants, etc. Of course it has a shared bathroom so we'll have to rough it for a couple of days. We'll take the difference & apply it to a few tours.

That sounds like a fun hotel. I stayed in one with a shared bathroom in Cripple Creek Colorado. It was definitely a different experience getting ready in the morning, but it was fun going back to a different era. Plus, like you said, you get to do more fun tours.

O.K. guys... I am an open-minded traveller but I draw the line at "shared" bathrooms. Sorry, but that is just a little creepy for me.

Yeah, the shared bathroom thing is not my cup of tea either. But then I do whatever I can to avoid using public restrooms too, which I guess is a little Mr. Monk-ish.

Yea, I hear you guys. They're not my first choice either but I thought we'd give them a one shot try & see how it goes. They're common in Europe from what I've read but it's a first time for us. We'll be sure to let everyone know our experience was. I survived the common bath in the service & didn't think anything of it. We'll probably be up at 5 AM to beat the rush.

The shared bathroom thing is common anywhere space is at a premium and real estate is outrageous. NYC has many hotels, not just the low end choices that offer only shared bathrooms. Reminds me of some college dorm rooms.

That was going to be my advice RichC. I was up and at 'em early in Cripple Creek. Honestly though, it really was how hotels were. It's just another adventure.

Me too, but I never liked it. At least I knew who was using it and more importantly who was cleaning it.

I stayed at a hotel on Majorca in 1982 where I had a room with nothing but a single bed and a small table, and the bathroom was down the hall. But it was just one night and I was pretty boiled from a night of steaming with my buddies. I think that room was a converted broom closet!

I knew the guys who were using it & they weren't the cleanest I've ever met.
