My mom and I are first timer on the Med cruise. We have never been to France. We are thinking of booking for a shore excursion tour for $72 US per person. We have a choice of Nice and Cannes or Nice and Monaco on your own. Which would you suggest? We like to sightsee, look around little shops.

<edit to enter correct cities>

Cannes is beautiful but not entirely unlike Nice. Monaco, in my opinion, is much more interesting and picturesque.

Having been to Monaco recently, I agree with f-mattox that it is a wonderful place to visit. Very interesting, lots of architectural styles, picturesque, and extremely varied. It's also quite hilly, so bring some water with you. There is so much to see, despite its small size -- the Casino, Palace, Old Monaco, Formula 1 race route, just for starters. We also went to Nice the same day... plenty of small shops, cafes, and picturesque walk along the Med. The two cities make for a great day.

thanks. Nice and Monaco it is. Personally I prefer to go on our own and save some money but with my mom (79 yesrs young) she feels much more safer and comfortable with the cruise ship shore excursion group.
Shore excursion will include a bus ride to Nice with 2 hours to spend on own then bus ride to Monaco to spend 3 hours on our own.
