We are completely new to cruising and need general and specific advice about shore excursions. We will be going on a 12 day cruise with the Emerald Princess in early July, stopping in Dubrovnik, Corfu, Katakolon (for Olympia), Athens, Mykonos, Kusadasi (for Ephesus), Rhodes, Santorini, Naples and disembarking at Civitavecchio.

1) Is it better to book shore excursions with the cruise (I'm assuming that the ship won't leave without us if we're late and with one of their shore excursions?!) or book in advance private companies as suggested on these forums or wait till we get there and book with companies who might be waiting at the port?
2) Which of the places can be explored by ourselves on foot? We are a party of 10, including 2 toddlers, which makes it difficult to book too many excursions, particularly all day ones.
3) Which of the places are pretty straightforward to get to by public transport and then explore by ourselves? The last thing we want is to be late back on the ship if we stray too far and the public transport is too complicated.

Any tips / comments / advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,
You might want to take a look at Matt Barrett's Greece Travel Guides. Excellent source of info about the Greek Islands. I've found it extremely helpful in planning our June trip to the Eastern Med.

Hello Oliveo,

We've always booked our own excursions on cruises and haven't ever had a problem. You have to do a lot of research on your own though. It is usually MUCH cheaper to plan your own. I just "google" the "port" and come up with lots of info. With 10 people, you could possiblly book a van in most locations to take you all where you want to tour.
We're going on our 1st Med. trip this spring also.
I know that Dubrovnik is a walled city and is "supposed" to be pretty easy to walk on your own. Kayakolon is the ONE port where they say you should consider booking the ship's tour, b/c otherwise there's not many alternative transport options there to take you to Olympia.
I also get tons of books from the library to study each port ahead of time. Tripadvisor.com is also another great website with forums and trip advice.
Have fun!
