Absolutey! We were on holiay there in February. Lovely place. You can easily walk from the harbour into the town. There is also a cable car that will take you up to a small town called Monte. Here you can look round the Botanical gardens and then take a wicker basket ride down again!! If you don't fancy the wicker basket just get a return ticket for cable car.

There are some good restaurants for lunch. Try the scabbard fish.

This was one of our best holidays ever. We will most definately be going back!!

I've never been there but I've been told that madeira is windy and very hilly ...is this true.?
I've also been told that it's a great place to visit.

Funchal has the best weather on the island. The island is quite hilly but there were many O.A.P.s walking about with no difficulty at all.
Monte can be a couple of degrees lower as it is up the mountain.
It's a wonderful place to visit.

Thanks Kentishgirl for the info on Funchal and Monte. I found more info about the cable car online and I think that's what we will do.

Funchal has a hop-on hop off siteseeing bus, a casino, several parks and gardens, shopping, winery tours, the cable car to Monte, all can be done on your own.

We were in Funchal in February also. We were there for the "carnival". Great atmosphere and very colourful.

Hi Lavanzo,

I noticed we are in Funchal on Sunday. Do you happen to know if many things will be closed for Sunday. For instance will the hop on hop of bus be running and the cable car to Monte. Thanks for any info.
