Has anyone taken the train from Rome's Termini station to port Civitavecchia?

Would you share your experiences, please?

We have taken that train many times in both directions. There is usually one train per hour (sometimes more) and the journey takes a little over an hour when using the regional trains. You can buy a special ticket called a BIRG ticket for 9 Euros. This ticket covers round trip to Rome on the regional trains plus unlimited use of the buses and metro within Rome. We use the BIRG when we have a port day in Civitavecchia. If you are heading to Civitavecchia with your luggage, keep in mind that the track used for the Civitavecchia train is often a long walk from the Termini entrance. Once you get to Civitavecchia you have a 4-5 block walk (its pretty easy and flat) to the port entrance where you can catch the free shuttle bus to your ship.

Sammee-

Please see the very first post in this section for all the details you will need for train travel in Italy. It is very detailed.

Hank is (as always) spot on here as the BIRG ticket is the way to if you are going to and from Rome. If its just a one way ticket from Rome to Civ, then you can just get a one way train only ticket as that is all you will need.

Jim,
Can I purchase the BIRG roundtrip from Rome to Civi on 20 Nov. and return on 30 Nov.?

Hank 10-24-2009 01:02 AM

No, but you would not want a BIRG for that trip anyway. The BIRG ticket is a one day ticket and simply includes round trip train and the use of Rome's local bus and metro system for that same day. This would not be of any use for your plans. However, all is not bad. The regular train ticket between Rome and Civitavecchia is actually cheaper than the BIRG (since it does not include using Romes buses and metro). I think the one-way ticket from Rome to Civitavecchia is only about 3 or 4 Euros.
