As it seems to be less expensive to do tours with other people and not the ship, is anyone booked on Carnival Freedom's Grand Mediterranean cruise June 6-18 that would care to share with us?

My wife and I are booked on this cruise as well and would be interested in sharing some tours. What do you have in mind?

I have been researching like crazy and the one we are really interested in is the port in Naples, doing the Pompeii thing in the a.m. as everyone says it can get quite hot in the afternoon, doing the Amalfi Coast drive and stopping in some of the towns, a good place for lunch, etc. Please read Hank's reply to my Sept. 18 post on post-cruise Florence. He said if there's one place to splurge, this would be the place. Let us know what you think of this plan. Bev

Hi Bev,
sounds like a good plan to us.We definately want to see Pompeii when we get to Naples and the Amalfi Coast drive sounds pretty good as well.Do you have any idea at this point what it would cost to do a private tour like this and how do you arrange it? Would also like to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa when we get to Livorno and perhaps go to Monacco when we get to Cannes. Keep in touch

Thanks for replying. You know a little about us, perhaps, from reading my other posts and we'd like to know a little about you folks too. I am going to be researching tours of Italy. In all the posts, some people tell who they used and even the driver. I don't think it will be cheap for the one in Naples as it will be a really full day. I have been making notes and somewhere I read where we should absolutely eat at Constantino's on this tour. They loved it. Of course, I know nothing about it. I do know the ship's tour does Pompeii in the afternoon in the heat of day and also does a cameo factory tour which we have no interest in. We can get our driver to stop in any villages of interest to us, plan a little shopping and steer us to a nice little restaurant. I will let you know what I find in my research on private tours or vice versa. I am quite busy the next few days but will stay in touch definitely. I'm glad we have time to plan carefully. Oh, one other thing. In our Sunday paper here, a man and his wife went on almost the same identical tour last year on Carnival Liberty and wrote an extensive article about it. Regarding Cannes, he said the ship's tour was $150 each to Monaco but that he and his wife, along with 7 traveling companions from the ship, took the train from Cannes to Monaco & returned to Cannes for 15 euros each. They went into the casino (which I understand there is a charge for and we have no interest in) walked the streets and had lunch and rode the train back to Cannes. It seems to me there is a lot of nice talk about a place called Eze on the way back, but the train doesn't go there. Just thought I'd throw that out as it seems the ship's tour is way overpriced at this stop. Bev

Hi Bev,

I was looking at the list of shore excursions that Carnival has and while there were no prices posted I understand a lot of the good ones are quite expensive. I am sure Pompeii and Amalfi coast would be prohibitive. I found one tour company on the internet that does this trip from Naples and obviously the more people you get the cheaper the price would be per couple. The price for 4 people was 600 Euros including a guide in Pompeii and 6 people was only 650 Euros.Maybe we can find another couple who is taking the cruise and want to join us.. Company was called Benvenuto Exlusive Chauffers. I will keep looking as well for more tours companys. Maybe to save a bit of money we could take the train from the ship and do Pompeii on our own and then hire a car for the Amalfi coast. Just a thought, Hanks seems to think it is doeable. One shore excursion we may book with Carnival is the Leaning Tower of Pisa where you can go inside the tower as I understand it is difficult to get tickets to do this. Unless we can find a private tour as well to take this trip. Are you interested? I wonder if Hank knows where to get tickets? Anyway I will keep pluggin away on the internet as well and see what I come up with in regard to other tours. This will be only the second cruise for my wife and I. the first one was to the Caribbean 15 years ago so we are really looking forward to cruising again. As a matter of fact we were booked to take this exact cruise on Carnival Liberty last month to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary but had to cancel because of sickness in the family.Oh well better late than never.Talk to you soon, keep me posted.

What do you know? We have some things in common. This is our gift to each other for our 45th anniversary. We will definitely be looking into the varying tours and I will type more later, but we ARE looking into Revelation Tours which has been mentioned often on this site and they needed more specific info. I should have an answer later in the day. I won't be on until late tonight as I lost my mind and we will be having five people in to dinner this evening, plus my DH and me. I don't do that often anymore as I get too nervous. Will let you know what I find. We haven't discussed Pisa yet, but we'll have to over the weekend. I'm so looking forward to this. Bev

Hi Bev,
in your next posting give me your e-mail address as it may be easier to communicate with you this way instead of logging on to this chat line all the time, Cheers.

Right on, Jim. Revelation Tours e-mailed me some very nice itineraries which I would like to forward to you and I also have to look up the one you mentioned. E-mail is
