My husband and I will be sailing on Carnival Liberty to Med Oct. 12th and I'm wondering what kind of weather to expect on ship and land. I've seen the "average temps", but who knows how accurate they are.
Has anyone sailed the Med during the fall? I would love to know whether to leave my shorts and flip flops at home or take sweatshirts and raincoats! |
1morecosmo,
I have taken Mediterranean cruises in October quite a few times. The average temperatures are what the name says - average temperatures. There can be times where it is consierably warmer as well as times where it is much colder. It is simply impossible to predict how the weather might be this upcoming October. My suggestion would be to take "warm weather clothes" as well as jeans (or similar) and a couple of sweaters or so per person. |
Thanks! I know there's no way to predict. In your experience, were you able to sit out on the pool deck comfortably or was it an inside cruise? We are used to warm weather cruises, so this should be an interesting vacation!!

1morecosmo,
from my personal experience, it was usually possible to enjoy the pool and the open decks. I experienced some pretty low temperatures in Venice in mid-October, but I would certainly not consider a Med cruise in October an "inside cruise". |
We were in the Eastern Med last year the second week of October. The weather was perfect. 75 in Venice and low 80's in the rest of Italy, Spain and Portugal. There was one day when we were supposed to go to Monte Carlo, it rained and got chilly and very windy. We had to skip Monte Carlo and went to Cannes instead which had lovely weather.
We wanted to see the cathedrals everywhere we went so we always wore pants (no shorts in church). And we carried a beach bag with light jackets just in case. Never needed them but good to be prepared. The pool was used everyday by our fellow passengers. (Not me - I burn in the sun too easily) Here's a tip, Rome has cobblestone streets, wear comfortable shoes or your feet will give out before you do. Have a great time. |
I meant to say Western Med....don't know what I was thinking.

Seethesea,
Thank you so much for your info! I'm in Seattle, so I'm used to rain and wind one minute and sun the next. We don't go anywhere here without dressing in layers! http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif I'm glad to hear the weather is still pleasant during October in the Med. Also, thanks for the reminder about shorts. I'll have to bribe my husband to wear pants while at port, but it will be worth seeing the many beautiful churches of the region. We bought Keen sandals for our trip. Should those be sufficient for the streets of Rome, Venice, etc.? Thanks again! |
October in the Med:
Prepare for cold weather, but prepare for hot weather too! October in the Med can be shorts and t-shirts if you are used to a colder climate, but the locals are wearing overcoats and scarves. Keep fingers crossed, you can have lovely late summer weather, especially early October. Goes dark early, though, so sweaters for evening! |
Oh!
I see you have already been! So do tell........ how was it??? |
