Does anyone know the best way to get from the Vatican to the Port of Civitavecchia?

My husband has a broken back so walking long distances is nearly impossible.

Thanks

Hi Brenda7214, welcome to Cruise-Chat. At the very beginning of this section is a post about traveling in Rome and parts of Europe. It is a great post and includes all different kinds of routes with times, etc. Hope that will help you. Best wishes for a fantastic cruise, hope your husband is doing better.

It is impossible to get around Rome without doing some walking, but you can always grab a taxi for short distances. From the Vatican, your best bet is to walk to the S. Pietro Train Station from where you can catch the regional train that runs between Rome and Civitavecchia. That train starts at Rome's main Termini Station and makes a stop at S. Pietro about 25 minutes later. From S. Pietro it is about 45 - 55 min to the Civitavecchia stop. At Civitavecchia, you exit the station and turn towards your left. It is than a very easy 4 block walk to the port entrance where you can get the free shuttle bus to the ship.

Hi Brenda7214,

Four blocks from train station to port. We did not walk it. It was hot hot for us so we took a cab for $20 euros. Otherwise, it is a dusty walk with all the the port traffic. And with a broken back. Forget the walking. Also, you will want to get to Vatican early to avoid lines because standing too long with back problems can be dicey.

Please take the way right from the exit of Civitavecchia train station to go to the port. If you cross the street just in front of the train station, there is an easy walk to the stopp of the shuttle busses at the port entrance (about ten minutes).

ARGH! UWE is absolutely correct and I must have had a senior moment when I posted that "left." So there is no confusion, you do indeed turn right when you exit the Civitavecchia Station and than walk to the port (keeping the water on your left). When you see McDonalds you know you are at the port entrance.
