Port to Livorno train station - is taxi the only option?

Hi there
I read in a number of postings that getting from the port to Livorno's main train station to catch a train to Florence is best by taxi - is this the only option?
Any bus or tram worth considering?

You could take the shuttle-bus from the ship to the central square in Livorno, if offered by your ship, and the public bus from there to the station. This would be a more time consuming but much cheaper option.

On Celebrity Millenium, the shuttle bus was $10 per person. The taxi to the train station was $20 (15 euro) - after a bit of haggling with the driver disappointed that we didn't want to pay 300 to drive all the way to Florence. Getting back was more fun - there were no taxis in sight at the Livorno train station. A bit of waiting, a bus ride to the central square, a run in the rain to grab a minivan taxi - and the six of made it to the ship with about 15 minutes to spare. Serge

Thanks for the info! would anyone know if there's a public bus from the port to the train station? or only from the central square?

I am not sure there is a bus from the port. The streets between the port and the central square looked pretty industrial and desolate, and the ship was docked some distance from the port entrance. We were also hoping to catch the last ship shuttle going from central square. I have no idea why they couldn't run the shuttles all the way to the train station.
