I would like to know if the hop on hop off buses are near the baltic ports? Is it hard to pass through port customs if i am coming via cruise ship and did not join any organized tours? Where are the nearest stops? Where can you buy the tickets? Any suggestions for city maps? Thank you very much for any info.
I think these are the ports:
1. helsinki - South harbor katajanokka Quay
2. stockholm - Frihamnen 638 - Viking line Ferry terminal
3. Copenhagen - 2100 copenhagen east langelinie Pier
4. tallinn - Port of Tallinn Muuga harbor

Hi Kate,

I returned a few days ago from Gems of Baltic cruise on HAL. Arrived and departed from Copenhagen but had no opportunity to explore the town.

TALLINN; An absolute picture-book of a place. We walked to the Old Town directly from ship. No hassle exiting port -- in fact, the people at the gate were very helpful (we had to show only our cruise pass). Maps and brochures were readily available as you exit the port. It's about a 20 to 30-minute walk from ship to Old Town. Bear in mind that much of the Old Town is uphill on cobblestone streets. It was very hot and humid during our stay (unusual for those parts), which was draining.

We then decided to book excursions through the ship for Helsinki and Stockholm so as to get an overview and then stayed in those cities at the end of the tour.

Our ship had a continuous video giving excellent directions for each port, and maps were handed out as we exited the ship.

We saw the red two-decker hop-on busses just outside the port gates in Helsinki and Stockholm but were happy we opted for the tours, as time is limited on such a port-intensive itinerary.

Have a wonderful trip!

Hi Kate:

we just return from Helsinki and Tallinn.

you just walk over to the market square. There you find any kind of sightseeing tours:

by boat (14-16 EUR)
by tram (6 EUR/daypass Take Line 3 in any direction as it works like a "8" through Helsinki - depending to the quay it could be that you need to connect with tram 4 to Market Square area
by bus (hop on-hop off)

Although you can walk yourself we had a personal guide for 50 EUR for three hours who met at the pier and went with us through Tallinns old town. BREATHTAKING!!!

Have a nice stay!
