Need help with travel and fares. We are wanting to go to Pompeii and then maybe doing the hike to Vesuvius. Then back to Naples to the Archaeological Museum. Then back to the ship. Wanting to know how to travel between points. Would the best way to get to the Circumvesuviana line from the ship be a taxi? How much would the taxi be? Would the best way from the Circumvesuviana line to the Archaeological Museum be a taxi? I heard crossing the street in Naples is very hard. We are traveling with little children, so would a taxi be better than walking?

For train travel times and fares, go towww.ftroute.com/ItalianTrains.htm and look for train schedules. With little children in tow, I'd forego the Vesuvius sidetrip. Not really that much to see.

Crossing the streets in any large Italian cities can be a challenge (not only cars and trucks but scooters.) Taxi to the station would probably be best with children. Finding one at the port could be a challenge - drivers are going to be looking for all day trips. It is walkable. Just be alert and quick when crossing the street and cross only at cross walks (regardless of what the locals do.)

You do have a few options depending on how much you like to walk. From ship to Naples train station is about 1 1/4 miles which is walkable. It can sometimes be difficult to get a taxi at the pier for that short run, but you can always try to flag down a taxi on the street. The other option is to cross the street, and buy a ticket for the local bus that will take you to the station (I think its the #1 but they would tell you at the newspaper stand where you buy your ticket). As to getting from the station to the museum, its about 3/5 or a mile which is a nice stroll. A taxi should be about 7 or 8 Euros. From the museum back to the ship is perhaps 2/3 of a mile so again you can either walk or grab a taxi (no more than 10 Euros). We are big fans of walking in the cities since its really the best way to see the place, plus it burns off some of the weight gained on cruises http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif
