We like Lucca, but this is not a city for everyone. Lucca is a relatively small compact walled city where you can stroll the streets, stop at a cafe, perhaps ride a bike around the top of the walls, and just relax. Its not a place full of museums and famous places like you find in Florence. You can get to Lucca on your own by taking the train from Livorno to Pisa where you change to the Lucca train.

How about if we go in the other direction: Siena, San Gimigniano, and Volterra?? Would you consider this a better choice than Lucca??? Thanks

Going the other way you are going to eat up a big chunk of your available time traveling to get there. Check the train link at the top of Europe Port Chat section. There are schedules from Livorno to Siena and San Gimigniano there.
