I would like to go there on my own from Marseilles. Is it advisable or easy to walk from the port to the central train station?

Forget walking from the port to the train station...its too far. You can either use the shuttle bus provided by your cruise line, or simply grab a taxi (assuming there are some avalable for short hauls). If you take the shuttle they will drop you on the square adjacent to the old port...which is within walking distance (a few blocks) of the train station.
