Rome for one day

Hi, we will be in Rome in September from 7AM to 7PM and plan to visit on our own. My question is: Is it possible to take the train from Civitavecchia to St-Peters, and walk our way to Station Termini to catch the train back to Civitavecchia. We are not planning to spend a lot of time at the Vatican. We just want to walk in the city and see the most we can.
