Time in Marseille and Provence

Will have a day docked in Marseille. Is this a worthwhile city to spend the day. Or is it better to go off to Aix, Arles or Avignon. I was considering Arles and Avignon by train. Or would I be disappointed having missed Marseille.
Any suggestions appreciated. We have been to Europe several times so I am familiar with taking trains and going out on my own. Would rather save some $$ by not booking an excursion for the three of us.

We had the same delimemma while planning our trip in June. We have opted to rent a car and drive through Provence. (we have aquired an international drivers license) We have several stops in mind and hope to make it to Avignon (I guess it is considered one of the 1000 places to see before you die) and Pont du Gard. Also planning to see St. Remy and Les Baux which I think may be train accessible. The other places we are going are not. Hope you have a great trip!
