I would like to "explore" things on my own, own, how far away is the pier from the touristic area ? Is it a free shuttle from the pier to the port entrance, and is there a public transportation to the center ?

hi,

we were in Izmir last september. its great there. we walked into the city. it was far away! take the horse carriage directly at the port and tell the "driver" to put you to grand bazar! the bazar is in the middle of the city and you can buy very interesting things there! I enjoyed it!
