We are on Brilliance in October and dock in Naples. Is it easy enough to do Capri and Sorrento on our own or shall we just spend the day in Capri? We don't want to do anything rushed! Thanks

Why not just keep your flexibility and let your plans evolve during the day. Its actually quite easy. I would suggest that you get off the ship, walk over to the hydrofoil/ferry pier (next to the ship towards your left as you exit the pier) and take a hydrofoil over to Capri (about a 40 min ride). If you find that you really like Capri (we love the place) than spend the day on the island and take the hydrofoil back to Naples. If, however, you find yourself bored with Capri, just take the jetboat (same pier as where you docked from Naples) over to Sorrento. From Sorrento, you can take the train (its the Circumvesuviania Line) back to Naples (about an hour for the train and 10 min for a taxi to the ship or its a 25 minute walk. Keep in mind that most of the decent stores in Sorrento will close around 1 pm until about 4. On Capri, some of the high-end boutiques also close in the afternoon, but many places remain open all day.

Thanks Hank. So I take it that Capri and Sorrento are in different directions. Do Capri, return to Naples and then set off for Sorrento- right?

Actually, they are in the same direction from Naples. Capri is an island that sits a few miles off the coast of Sorrento, both of which are south of Napls. It is a lot close to take a boat from Capri to Sorrento than it is to take a boat from Capri to Naples. But, Naples offers very fast hydrofoils which really shorten the trip while I believe that all the boats between Capri and Sorrento are the somewhat slower "jet boats" (I do not recall any hydrofoils running between Capri and Sorrento---...but I could be wrong). If you were to take a train from Sorrento to Naples you would head North and the train line would go through Pompeii and than Ercolano (this is the location of Herculanium) before arriving at Naples. So, if you want to go to both Sorrento and Capri you can actually do it in any order using a combination of train and boat. From Capri you can catch a boat directly to Sorrento and than use the train from Sorrento to Naples or vice versa. If you would take any kind of boat directly back to Naples (such as from Capri) it is important to make sure the boat goes to Mollo Beverello, which is the name of the pier adjacent to your cruise ship. There are a few boats that dock at a different Naples pier called Mergellina which is located about 3 miles from the ship. Sorry to make this sound complicated (its not) but its good to know all the facts.

If you want it, here is a link to the time-table of the hydro foils from Sorento to Naples and so.

I forgot to tell you the page for the Circumvesiviana, that will bring you from Sorrento by train to Naples:
