We are going to try and do Rome "on our own" in August. We are planning on taking the train into Rome. Does anybody know if we need to make reservations in advance for the train or can we just purchase a ticket at the train station?

Buy your tickets at the station. A majority of the trains are Regional (commuter type) and you cannot purchase reservations on them as there are no reserved seats.

You might also want to inquire about a BIRG ticket (you can also buy this at the Civitavecchia train station. A BIRG ticket costs 9 Euros and covers the round trip train to Rome plus unlimited use of Rome's buses and subways for the entire day. The only thing not covered is the #110 Bus which is also known as the HOHO (Hop On Hop Off) bus.

Thank you for your suggestions. Any opinions as to what time we should leave Rome. Our ship leaves at 7pm.

There are local trains that leave Rome at 9 and 39 minutes past each hour. Under normal conditions, we generally would take the 3:39 train which should get you into Civitavecchia at about 5. If you are a bit of a gambler, the 4:09 would also be possible.

I would leave Rome no later than 16:00. Give yourself a safety buffer in case there is a problem along the way.
