Wow! All this information is mindboggling! But very informative. We will be on our first cruise departing from Civitavecchia (Nov. 20-30). Although I have made reservations at Hotel Saint Paul on Nov. 19,I am now wondering if it would be best to go straight from FCO to Civitavecchia and make it our homebase, and take the train to tour Rome that day and return Nov. 30 for another tour? This would alleviate all the traveling and expensive from FCO to hotel, hotel to port and the return trips by shuttle. Suggestions please.

Sammee- You have not received a response as of yet because you probably should have posted your question directly in the European cruise section. but let me try to help- You certainly could hotel in Civitavecchia and do what you are proposing. However, I'm not sure it buys you much. From FCO you still have to take a train to Rome Termini to get to the train that goes out to Civitavecchia. There is no direct train. So you add a cost of a round trip ticket to Rome for each time you would want to go into Rome (assuming that the extra ticket to Civitiavecchia would have to have been purchased anyway)

Getting to FCO for your return flight requires you to travel into Rome/change trains and then go on to FCO. So I think in the long run, just staying in Rome is the best option as there really is not much to see out in Civitavecchia anyway.

Okay, I have checked the website. I see that there is a regional 1st and 2nd class leaving Rome to Civi...at 14:09 and arriving 15:13. Can I arrange reservations for 1st class on the regional from Rome to Civitavecchia to confirm 6 seats on 20 Nov; and if so, can it be done on-line from USA?

I see that our return on 30 Nov. 09 at 9:17 to Rome has only 2nd class, which means we can't make reservations. Hope the train isn't packed.

Sammee,

You are better off waiting until you get to Italy. If you reserve seats they are for specific seats, in a specific car, on a specific train. Trying to change them is next to impossible.

I would suggest getting 2nd class tickets to give you more flexibility. Regeionale 2nd class tickets are good on any regionale trai (for up to 90 days). You can purchase tickets at the FCO rail station. Purchase your return tickets at the same time.
